Ki Energetics

'Ki' is the Japanese term for universal energy (also known as ‘hado’), just as the Chinese use 'chi', the Indians 'prana', and so on. Ki Energetics is based on the martial art Aikido, and is a sophisticated understanding of human energies and their development.

As a method of dealing with anxiety and phobia, it works to interrupt the 'contraction > fear state' link (see here). Using a number of simple exercises, a client can be shown how to use his/her energy in a way which is instantly empowering, leading to a body-based calmness and groundedness. Ongoing practice leads ever deeper into ways of being in the body that virtually prevent the onset of fear states. Many people are unknowingly 'out of the body', with their energy congested around the head and shoulders and above, and the body in a generally contracted state. Ki Energetics makes the body a reliable and strong ally, instead of a burden.

In terms of subtle energies, Ki Energetics works largely at the level of the ‘gross’ body, or the physical-etheric. Martial artists are, knowingly or not, developing this part of their energy system above all, and the development of this part of the human energy system is very much required to build a strong base for further development at the subtle and causal levels. Many ‘new-age’ groups are liable to jump straight to astral or subtle development without sufficient training or grounding in the ‘etheric’ body. The result can be a tendency to ‘space out’ and to avoid inhabiting the physical-energetic body. Out of this can come all sorts of imbalances.

Probably the best way to develop this crucial part of ourselves is to get into the habit of centering, grounding, inhabiting the body regularly throughout the day. An article on a simple approach to this can be found here. Other methods are the practice of Chi Kung or Ki Energetics if you can find a teacher who really embodies this teaching. T’ai Chi is another useful training, as are the martial arts which are based on a true understanding of these energies. The best of these is Aikido in my experience—you might be lucky enough to find a teacher of Aikido and Ki Energetics as I did.

If you would like a training in developing this energetic approach, contact me and discuss the possibilities.

The Books of Mantak Chia provide a ‘modern’ Taoist  approach to physical-etheric development. They are, however, not really written for the modern westerner, who really needs a method which he/she can incorporate into a modern life..
