The solution is literally in your hands – and feet.
Known for thousands of years, dating from early Chinese history and their understanding of meridians and zones, reflexology is a hidden wonder of natural medicine. In my experience, and that of many others, there is a huge amount you can do for yourself simply, in a few minutes, for acute or chronic complaints, using the body’s own system of ‘reflexes’ set up during your development as an embryo.
What can be treated? In my experience there is nothing that will not be improved by some regular rubbing of sore reflex points in the foot or hand (see diagram below).
‘If it hurts, rub it’Reflexology (like most bodywork) operates on the principle of ‘if it hurts, rub it’ which we all instinctively know, and which we often do automatically. A painful place in the body is an indication that a blockage exists in that place. A blockage normally indicates a place where rigidity has begun to develop, which in turn suggests that the body is not fully able to innervate or provide circulation to, that part. It needs help! In the reflex zones of the hands and feet, it often feels that there is a lumpy or crystalline feel under the skin. These are build-ups of toxic or waste material which are like a log-jam in a stream. The body needs a hand (literally) to help move the log-jam. And it is often the case that a few minutes of rubbing will eliminate the pain from such an area. It is less known that in the reflex zones, not only is the pain removed from the local part, but the corresponding zone in the body is also affected, sometimes dramatically.
The eyes have itFor example, my eyes have always been easily stressed by glare or computer monitors or any other activity that overworks the eyes. Once I am reminded of this by the feeling of tiredness or dryness or pain in the eyes (or increasingly, before I even feel that) I whip my shoe off, if possible, and rub the zone for the eyes – found on the ball of the foot on the pad just at the base of the 2nd and 3rd toes (if the big toe is considered the 1st). Many people will find to their surprise that this is a painful place if rubbed, indicating that we all overwork our eyes, or at least forget to relax them after working them (another important technique to use for dealing generally with stress, which I’ll describe later). I find that every time I do this, if even for 2 or 3 minutes, my eyes are instantly refreshed. Similar stories abound for different complaints – aches and pains, tiredness, headaches, bowel problems, sexual problems, lethargy waking up, etc.
Foot or hand?Because the foot is larger, it is generally easier to access the reflexes there than on the hand. Moreover, charts for the feet are more available. However, you will often find yourself needing to perk yourself up with a quick reflex massage and unable to take your shoes off, so it is very well worth knowing the main reflexes of the hands. I find that with practice that the hands are almost as effective as the feet.
Not only physicalJust as acupuncture deals with body/mind/emotions seamlessly, so does reflexology affect our moods for the better. You’ll find that after a bit of vigorous reflexology (on yourself, or on someone else) that your mood will be much improved. Even making the attempt at self-help in any way is a powerful antidote to low moods, but there are objective effects. Acupuncture is a deep and ancient and effective system in which the various organ systems are closely linked to specific emotions (positive and negative). For example, anger is said to result from blockages in the energy flows in the liver/gall bladder meridian system, and fear in the bladder/kidney. Balancing these systems leads to an improvement in these emotional conditions.
Acupressure and ReflexologySo if you want to go further in developing your skills in self-help (and helping others) I suggest you learn the use of acupressure with reflexology to make even more powerful changes for the better in your health.
An example of using bothLet’s imagine that you have a problem with your bowels/colon. Using acupressure, there is a powerful treatment available by simply rubbing along the (thumb) side of the index finger from fingertip to wrist. This follows the Large Intestine meridian. I guarantee that vigorous rubbing of this line, and in particular the part between the 2nd and 3rd joint of the finger will have an excellent effect. Combine this then with the Reflex zones of the hands or feet, approximately across the middle of the palm or sole of foot (see a chart, available on the websites mentioned below, for the specifics).
In my natural therapy practice, I make it a habit to teach people the basics of this terrific practice. Those who do never look back, and have a tool they can apply to just about anything that ails them.
Remember –1. They can’t stop you rubbing your own zones! And it is a lot cheaper than absorbing synthetic chemicals into the body.
2. If something hurts, it needs to be rubbed! So even if you don’t know what a specific painful place links to, rub it! You’ll be doing yourself a big favour.
