Weight Underside and the 2-Minute Pause

As a culture we seem to have lost a very important quality – the desire and ability to take care of our own health. Even as we spend more and more on all kinds of health support, especially alternative methods, we are finding that we are losing more confidence in ourselves to take charge of our own health. Partly this is due to a serious concerted effort by corporate health to have us subscribe to their products and services, and partly to a lack of time to sort through for ourselves what we feel is best. There is a pervasive and persuasive influence suggesting to us at all times to put ourselves in the hands of the ‘professionals’. But thankfully, there are many who are realising that in principle, natural methods and sources of health care, food, and home products are the most desirable.
This article is to help you redress the balance a little, and to remind you that you are the expert when it comes to your life and your health, and that there is a great deal that can be done, by you alone for yourself.
My many years as a practitioner and researcher in the fields of natural medicine and alternative methods has led to a synthesis I call ‘Energy Body Work’ which is based on principles that 1. tend to the holistic 2. make us the experts in our own lives we are more than a physical body – we have other ‘bodies’ as well, including the mental, emotional, and energy bodies, to name a few.
Getting back into the body! This may seem to be an odd statement but the fact is that many people are ‘out of their body’ due to the repeated habit of stress-induced responses to the various shocks of living in this world. Over time, many people are just surviving, feeling little of what’s going on in the body except pain…
Weight underside
A terrific and simple exercise to change this comes from the martial art Aikido, called ‘weight underside’. By this I mean… 1. get comfortable, and start to turn down the volume of your thoughts 2. ‘tune in’ to your weight, the sense of gravity 3. allow that weight to sink through the body to the underside of the body, so that if you are seated, the weight ‘collects’ under the buttocks, thighs, forearms and feet. 4. Let that process continue as a kind of ‘streaming’ through the body, that is, as a dynamic process
Please do it right now!
What’s happening here? Because weight is a completely physical principle, when you fully connect in this way to it, you are re-entering the physical body in a manner of speaking… You are re-occupying your body, and thus automatically redressing the balance of the modern world, in which we are most of the time caught up in the world of thoughts. When you do this, you’ll find that you simply feel much better, more balanced, and your ‘subtle bodies’ will be more aligned.
Of course we can go further, but this is an exercise which can and should be done as often and as for long as possible. Don’t wait for a special time out, or a meditation session to do this – the whole point of it is to incorporate it into your daily life, as part of everything you do. It will rapidly give depth and stability to all you do, and energetically speaking will develop your energy body, or said another way, will strengthen your ‘aura’. It is also a great way to train yourself in ‘mindfulness’.
The 2 minute pauseThis leads to an associated practice. Part of the problem of daily life, if we are interested in self-development, is that sense that we are often forgetting ourselves, and we ‘come to’ hours later with the realisation that we’ve been effectively ‘awol’ for some hours. I suggest that you put reminders around, such as post-it notes, wearing different jewellery, switching your watch to the other hands, etc., all designed to ‘wake us up’ when we notice them. And having woken up briefly, spend a minute or two checking in to the body, dropping into it with the ‘weight underside’ exercise above, and remaining there for as long as possible.
The other benefit of this practice is that by doing so you will be seriously counteracting a very common human habit, which is that we contract constantly under the stresses of daily life. Now there is nothing wrong with contraction or stress. But the problem is that usually we do not take the time to ‘un-contract’ or relax, whether it be the muscles in our arm or our whole body. This 2-minute pause allows us to relax the whole body, and thereby let go of the unhealthy aspects due to contraction in our lives. This will lead to a much greater feeling of well-being and a habit which I’m sure will extend your life significantly as well as improving its quality.
I hope you try these exercises. They have worked extremely well for me and my clients for many years.
